Symposium: Scotch-Irish Identity Saturday, June 2, 2001 Ramada International Airport Hotel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Sponsored by the Center for Scotch-Irish Studies, in association with the Scotch-Irish Society of the USA, and the Scotch-Irish Foundation. Scholars will present papers on aspects of Scotch-Irish identity, with particular attention to the impact of eighteenth and nineteenth century immigration from Ulster through the cities of Philadelphia, PA; Chester, PA; Baltimore, MD; and Newcastle, DE (and their hinterlands). This may include case studies of the adaptation to a new cultural identity (Scotch-Irish), the involvement in business enterprises, associations, and educational and religious institutions, and the interactions with other groups and with the descendants of earlier Ulster immigrants. The following topics would also be of interest: “persistence” and mutation of cultural traits, and the mechanisms that facilitate this; the effect of “chain migration” of family members from one location in Ulster. There may also be discussion of internal migration beyond traditional regions of settlement, including the later development of Scotch-Irish communities in the Southwest and on the Pacific coast. Program There will a welcoming reception on Friday evening, June 1. On Saturday, June 2, presentation of papers will commence at 9:30 A.M., and continue until 4:30 P.M., with breaks for coffee and lunch. The symposium will conclude with a farewell dinner (with entertainment) in the hotel. Advance reservations will be required for the dinner.
